Andy Powell Needs a Designated Caddie

Wales rugby star Andy Powell has been fined and banned from driving for 15 months after attempting to make a late-night food run while still drunk hours after his squad’s win over Scotland on Feb. 14. That the vehicle he used while intoxicated was a golf cart (or “golf buggy” to those wacky Brits) means little, of course. ↵↵⇥“Beer is a staple of any rugby side and here there was more than a few pints of beer. Mr. Powell was out until the early hours of the morning,” [Powell’s lawyer Conrad Gadd] said.↵⇥↵⇥“By 5.30am he and one colleague were hungry. There was no intention to drive but they got in the golf buggy and Powell drove it about a mile-and-a-half to the services.”↵⇥
↵↵ ↵↵A mile and a half? That’s it? The lawyer tried to deflect blame by saying Powell’s “buggy” never reached its top speed of 20 mph while he was driving it. Well, if that were the case, that’s an even better argument that he and his buddy could have hoofed it there on foot. Sure, they were probably still tired from a grueling match, but these are ruggers, who never stray from telling you how tough they are.↵
