Around AL West Spring Training, 3/24: Santana’s Not-So-Funny Bone

Mariners: Cliff Lee’s game of catch didn’t go so well on Tuesday, as he still felt some discomfort in his abdomen. He says it’s getting better, though, and he’ll throw on flat ground again on Thursday...even though it’s only spring training, Ichiro robbed Jeff Mathis of an extra-base hit in Tuesday’s game with one of the better catches of the decade...Chone Figgins and Ichiro have combined for 17 walks and four strikeouts so far this spring, a possible harbinger of annoyance to come for opposing pitchers.

Angels: Scot Shields didn’t pitch the best game of his life on Tuesday, but his body felt nice and healthy...Ervin Santana banged his elbow on a piece of furniture and has an inflamed bursa sac, forcing him to miss a start.

Athletics: The A’s didn’t play on Tuesday, but Brett Anderson did throw a five-inning simulated game...Athletics Nation discusses an interview with assistant GM David Forst...Update: the A’s dealt infielder Gregorio Petit to Texas in exchange for reliever Edwar Ramirez.
Rangers: Edwar Ramirez, Pedro Strop, and Brandon Boggs were cut from camp and optioned to AAA, while Tanner Scheppers, Geoff Geary, and Michael Kirkman were optioned elsewhere...Richard Durrett has injury updates on eight different Rangers. While Ian Kinsler is making progress, Tommy Hunter is frustrated by the fact that he still feels sore...unsurprisingly, Rich Harden will start on Opening Day. Behind him will be C.J. Wilson, Scott Feldman, Matt Harrison, and Colby Lewis...Keith Law writes up some observations on Martin Perez and a few other prospects...Update: Edwar Ramirez has been traded to Oakland for infielder Gregorio Petit, and Hernan Iribarren has been outrighted off the 40-man roster. Petit will compete with Esteban German and Joaquin Arias for the utility position.
