GASP! Jon Scheyer Did Not Swear Allegiance to Duke From the Womb

Jon Scheyer is the latest in a long and decorated line of Duke basketball players who are vehemently hated by everyone who doesn’t reside or didn’t attend school in Durham. That’s the kind of loathing that comes with the territory once you commit to the Blue Devils. It’s not the worst thing in the world, but it can be a lot to ask of a kid to take during every road game.↵↵What is unreasonable is people demanding that the player have an established fondness for a program or a team before showing up to play. After all, a player is going to do what is best for his or her career. I would wager that very few professional athletes end up on the team they spent their formative years rooting on. With that in mind, it shouldn’t be all that shocking that Scheyer admitted on the Dan Patrick Show yesterday that he wasn’t always wild about the Dukies. ↵
↵↵⇥Dan asked if Scheyer ever hated Duke. “At times I did, ya,” Scheyer said. “Around junior high, I really disliked Duke.”↵⇥↵⇥Scheyer said that it wasn’t the players. “All my friends like Duke, and I wanted to be different,” Scheyer said.↵⇥
↵↵↵That’s not one of the usual reasons cited (video’s language NSFW) for why one would hate on Duke, but I suppose it’ll have to suffice. At most, Scheyer will be a member of the team for a few more weeks, so it’s probably not the worst time to come clean about his minor conflict of conscience. ↵
