Kentucky 62, Cornell 45: Big Red’s Amazing Tournament Run Comes To An End

Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) - DeMarcus Cousins came up with 16 points and Eric Bledsoe got eight of his 12 at the free throw line, as top-seeded Kentucky brought an end to Cornell’s improbable run through the NCAA Tournament with a 62-45 victory in the East Regional semifinals.

Patrick Patterson added nine points and 12 rebounds, Darius Miller scored nine and John Wall recorded eight points, eight assists and seven boards to help overwhelm the Big Red.

The Wildcats (35-2) advanced to the Elite Eight for a matchup with second- seeded West Virginia on Saturday. The Mountaineers handled Washington, 69-56, in the other regional semi.

Louis Dale had 17 points and Ryan Wittman added 10 for upstart 12th-seed Cornell (29-5), which had never won an NCAA Tournament game prior to this year and became the first Ivy League team to reach the round of 16 since 1979.

The Big Red’s ability to knock down three-pointers, in large part, carried the team to the Sweet 16, but Thursday’s 5-for-21 showing from beyond the arc ultimately did Cornell in.
