Yesterday, reports surfaced that Brian Wilson had signed an extension with the Giants. Now we’ve got the financial details. Says Andrew Baggarly:
Brian Wilson’s Extension Worth $15m Over Two Years
As I predicted last night, the Giants indeed bought out a couple of Brian Wilson’s arbitration years. I just learned that Wilson’s contract extension, which will be announced soon, is for two years and $15 million.
He’ll receive $6.5 million in 2011 and $8.5 million in 2012. I’d imagine the contract has standard incentives for awards and such, but I haven’t seen the full provisions.
Wilson, who became eligible for arbitration this offseason as a super-two player, will still have one year of team control remaining after the two-year extension expires. What the deal does accomplish, however, is give the Giants some cost certainty going forward. Admittedly, though, this is a pricier deal than I or many expected, and one can’t help but feel like, while Sabean locked up a talented player, he once again locked him up for a little too much.
The Giants now have $39.5m committed in 2012 salary to Wilson, Barry Zito, and Aaron Rowand.
