Around NL West Spring Training, 3/26: Injury Round-Up Edition

Diamondbacks Justin Upton was kept out of the Arizona line-up on Thursday, the after-effects of a slight sprain suffered on Wednesday on an infield hit. He’s hopeful of being back in the line-up on Friday: “I’m day-to-day and we’ll see how it feels. I felt good running through the stuff we had to do. It’s getting better and I hope it gets better every day.”

Dodgers Catcher Russell Martin, making his way back from a groin injury, caught four innings in a minor-league game against the Texas Rangers in surprise. Said manager Joe Torre, “He looked very normal to me. I didn’t see any hesitation in anything he tried. We have to wait until we see how he feels tomorrow.” However, if there are no further setbacks, he should be able to make the Opening Day lineup for LA against the Pirates on April 5.

Giants Utilityman Emmanuel Burriss underwent surgery to replace a surgical screw in his foot, in a bid to improve the healing process. Burriss originally hurt it last July, but re-injured it in the Cactus League opener. He’ll not be available for at least the first two months of the season, leaving San Francisco struggling for a backup infielder who can play shortstop. It’s suggested they may be in the trade market for a dependable middle infielder.

Padres Jeff Moorad is now the co-owner of the Padres, after a $45 million payment made earlier this week. In an interview, Moorad said, “I feel at this point the business has stabilized and we’re now beginning to grow again.” The CEO also said he believes the Padres’ strategy will involved the development of affordable talent from within rather than through free agency

Rockies The last spot in the Colorado bullpen is down to three players: Justin Speier, Tim Redding and Joe Beimel. Redding may have the best shot, given the spot in question is most likely to be used as long relief. And there was also good news for the Rockies on the closer front: Huston Street will play catch today, and it’s hoped he’ll be back closing by the start of May.
