Xavier Is Heartache University For This Year’s NCAA Tournaments

Last Thursday, most the college hoops nation watched in awe as Xavier and Kansas State played what is easily the best game of this year’s men’s NCAA Tournament. It was a double overtime affair with way too many huge shots to choose from. The Musketeers fell in the second overtime to the Wildcats. While that game might’ve made for a few restless nights, I’m not sure it compares to what happened to the school’s women’s hoops team against Stanford on Monday. Here are the final seconds:↵

↵Dee Dee Jernigan blew two open layups, and she knew it. Scanning the AP photos, I haven’t seen this many pictures of someone who looked like they were shot dead on the floor since Adam Morrison in the 2006 NCAA Tournament. Jeff Eisenberg at The Dagger likened it to Darius Washington Jr. blowing the final two free throws of a three-shot foul. That’s about as spot-on a comparison as I can think of at the moment, and perhaps the Xavier one is even worse because a Final Four trip was on the line.↵
