The injury bug bit the US Men’s National Team again on Wednesday as Stuart Holden left the team’s Friendly against the Netherlands with an apparent leg injury after a nasty tackle from Holland’s Nigel DeJong. Holden had x-rays taken after the match and his club team Bolton (Barclay’s Premier League) announced early Thursday morning that Holden had suffered a broken leg and will miss six weeks.
Stuart Holden To Miss Six Weeks With Broken Leg; US Soccer Takes Another Hit
This time frame would allow Holden to return both for the end of Bolton’s Premier League schedule and for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but it remains to be seen whether he will be truly fit when he returns.
While the injury certainly is worrisome for the US Men’s National Team, the time frame for Holden’s return along with the fact that there was no ligament damage, has to come as some comfort for the team. They were without six regulars against the Netherlands and are getting very thin across the pitch. Most of the injured players are expected to return to the team in time for South Africa, but they are missing valuable time on the pitch to be in the best shape they can for the World Cup.
