Fantasy Baseball: Sunday’s Spring Training Roundup

Here are some thoughts after reviewing Sunday’s spring training games. There were plenty of rainouts in Arizona so this will be short.

Dodgers catcher Russell Martin will be sidelined for 4-6 weeks with a groin pull. That seems like a lot of time to miss for that injury, and these comments from Dodgers GM Ned Colletti, from MLB.com, leave me with questions about Martin’s future in LA:

The way he came into camp, we can’t tell anybody what’s best for them,” Colletti said. “They have to decide that on their own. Obviously, he decided to come in in the condition he did. We had communication with him throughout the winter and then it went cold for a little bit of time. Tigers rookie outfielder Austin Jackson went 1-2 with a SB and is hitting .556 so far. Will he make the Tigers forget about Curtis Granderson?

Marlins outfielder Cameron Maybin strained his groin while running the bases and could be out for a few days. Should he be out any substantial amount of time, Scott Cousins or Bryan Peterson could fill in for him should he not be ready for Opening Day.

A day after playing third base for the Cardinals, Felipe Lopez started at 2B and batting second. Prospect David Freese started at third base and went 0-3 with 2 strikeouts.

Melky Cabrera started in right field for the Braves and went 1-2 with a walk and 2 runs scored. Should the Braves give prospect Jason Heyward more time in the minors, Cabrera will probably man right field for the Braves.

Third base prospect Pedro Alvarez hit 6th in the Pirates lineup going 2-4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. He will be playing in Pittsburgh by June.

Phillies outfield prospect Domonic Brown went 3-5 with 2 RBI and threw out another baserunner vs the Rays on Sunday. He is hitting .538 in early spring training action. Should he have a show more power in AA in 2010, he may make it easier for the Phils to allow Jayson Werth to become a free agent after the 2010 season.

Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond continues to push Christian Guzman in spring training. He wetn 2-4 with an RBI and run scored on Sunday. His bat and glove may push the Nationals to deal Guzman in spring training.

First baseman Daniel Murphy batted fifth behind Jason Bay on Sunday. Will Murphy be able to protect Bay in 2010?
