Fantasy Baseball: Monday’s Spring Training Roundup

Most teams were back at it on Monday afternoon, so here’s some thoughts I have after reviewing some boxscores:

Dodgers second baseman Blake Dewitt now has a stranglehold on the second base competition in Los Angeles. He got on base four times on Monday with two hits and two walks vs the Giants. He is hitting .800 in the early going so far in camp.

Red’s rookie pitcher Aroldis Chapman pitched two shutout innings in his spring training debut, giving up one hit while striking out three. Chapman will more than likely start the season in the minors.

Braves outfield prospect Jason Heyward hit his first homer of spring training. He drove in two runs and also walked.

Tigers starting pitcher Max Scherzer failed to get two outs in the first inning, giving up five runs on four hits and three walks. He now has an ERA of 30.86.

Marlins outfield prospect Michael Stanton went 3-5 with 3 runs scored. With Cody Ross and Cameron Maybin both nursing injuries, I am curious if the Marlins will rush Stanton in 2010. Marlins pitcher Ricky Nolasco struck out 5 in 3 innings of work.

Mariners prospect Dustin Ackley went 1-5 batting second in the Mariners lineup, and he played second base again. The Mariners are really giving him a shot at second in spring training. If he can make the switch to second base, it will increase his value to fantasy owners.

Brewers outfielder Corey Hart hit his 2nd HR of spring training. Could he return to being a 20-20 player in 2010?

Padres third baseman Chase Headley hit his first HR of spring training today. The Padres have him batting fourth in the lineup behind Adrian Gonzalez. He should get plenty of RBI opportunities and could be a breakout player in 2010.

Rockies catcher Miguel Olivo went 3-3 with a HR and 3 RBI. He could force Chris Iannetta to the bench in 2010 should Iannetta continue to not hit like he did in 2009.
