The Atlanta Thrashers Aren’t As Close To The Playoffs As They Appear

A quick glance at the NHL standings will show you that the Atlanta Thrashers are just two points behind 6th place Philadelphia, 7th place Montreal and 8th place Boston. Two little points, one win. Just win one more game than one of those teams the rest of the way, and a tie is at least in order, right?

↵Not quite. As SBN’s Bird Watchers Anonymous points out:

↵↵In reality the Thrashers are not 2 points behind but 3 points behind because they lack tie breakers with all three teams that they are chasing. Now factor in that all three teams ahead of them have played one fewer game, the Thrashers are looking at a much bigger gap than just 2 points.

↵↵They go on to post a handy little guide to show how many wins Atlanta will need depending on how the teams ahead of them perform the rest of the way. Perhaps the biggest obstacle for the Thrashers, though? Their schedule: Washington twice, Pittsburgh twice and New Jersey once. That’s about as hard as it can get.
