Tensions are high in the mayhem surrounding the Phoenix Coyotes financial and ownership situation these days. People in Winnipeg are still mad their team was relocated 14 years ago. People in Phoenix obviously don’t want their team (which is of course the same team) to suffer the same fate.

↵Meanwhile, the Canadian media has been all over the story, largely echoing the view of many Canadians who feel hockey doesn’t belong in the Southern United States, especially at the expense of a Canadian team like the old Winnipeg Jets.

↵No paper has covered the situation more than The Globe & Mail in Toronto, so the front-runners to buy the Coyotes, Ice Edge Holdings, decided it would be fun to play a bit of an April Fools prank on Globe hockey writer David Shoalts.

↵↵Ice Edge COO Daryl Jones told the Toronto Globe and Mail on Thursday that his group was dropping its bid for the Coyotes hockey team and would instead look to buy Manchester United, one of the most valuable sports assets in the world. He told the newspaper that the sale would be financed via revenue bonds through the Stonehenge Municipality (a fictional entity).

↵↵Shoalts ran the story, despite the fact that it was ... you know, fake. This egg on the face of one the Globe makes fans of the Coyotes very, very happy. SBN’s ‘Yotes blog, Five For Howling:

↵↵What’s hilarious is that this news came from nowhere. Absolutely nowhere. It’s not like he made it up. He got it from a “source” and actually ran with it. Why would you do that? This is quite possibly the laziest ass reporting I’ve ever seen! I mean I hate the guy and make no bones about that but really? Where is your journalism degree from? Cracker Jacks University? Just to note. This entire thing is false!

↵↵The paper has removed the story from their website.

UPDATE: Just after this was published, Shoalts updated his Twitter feed, saying that he is "sorry for being so incredibly stupid in falling for the Ice Edge 'story' " and that there is "no excuse for this."
