St. Louis Deals Julio Lugo To Baltimore

Infielder Julio Lugo, who came to camp with the Cardinals but didn't have great odds of landing a job, has been traded to the Orioles in exchange for cash or a player to be named later.

Lugo was informed earlier that he had been traded to the Orioles and is now looking at a more prominent role. The trade is for a player to be named or cash considerations. Baltimore will also receive an undisclosed amount of cash in the deal.

In Baltimore, Lugo will serve as middle infield depth behind starters Brian Roberts and Cesar Izturis, presumably at the expense of Robert Andino. The veteran could end up seeing significant playing time, as Roberts has been bothered by back problems throughout the spring and may not be ready to play on Opening Day. Lugo, 34, is not a plus defender, but he's adequate, and last year batted .280 between Boston and St. Louis.

As for the Cardinals' side, Lugo's departure opens the door for all of Allen Craig, Nick Stavinoha, and Joe Mather to break camp with the team. The three were previously competing for two spots on the bench, but now a third has become available, as Lugo was rendered expendable upon the addition of infielder Felipe Lopez a month ago.

Lugo is due more than $9m in 2010, but the Red Sox are on the hook for his entire salary.
