Rangers Claim Ryan Garko Off Waivers From Seattle

The Texas Rangers have claimed 1B/DH Ryan Garko off waivers from the Seattle Mariners. Garko was placed on waivers a few days ago as he had lost a spring competition with Mike Sweeney for a spot on the bench.

There had been speculation the Texas Rangers would make a bid for Ryan Garko and it turns out they did. They had to wait for the entire 72-hour waiver period to pass before the claim could become official, but Garko is now a Ranger and the M's are off the hook for his $550,000 in salary.

The Rangers have been in the market for a right-handed slugging first baseman-type for a while, now, and Garko is both better than Kevin Millar and easier to get than Mike Lowell. Garko isn't much of a defender, but he has throttled left-handed pitching throughout his career, making him a desirable role player down south.

Garko’s addition gives the Rangers a full 40-man roster. Max Ramirez, a catcher who was being considered for the backup 1B job, has been optioned to AAA.
