Ryan Newman won Phoenix thanks to guessing that taking two tires was the right call.
Why Didn’t Anyone Try To Gamble By Staying Out At Phoenix?
↵The wrong call on that final pit stop was to take four tires, which is what Kyle Busch did.
↵But was Newman right? Obviously, it won him the race.
↵Yet afterward, some were left to wonder: Why didn’t anyone try to stay out on old tires and gamble?
↵Even Newman was puzzled that no one attempted to steal a victory with pit strategy.
↵“Four tires, two tires, no tires,” he said. “I’m surprised that there wasn’t a guy that went out there with no tires just to see. There was 24 cars in the lead lap, it’s like, ‘Why wouldn’t you?’
↵“Some guys just don’t take that risk, and I was glad that they didn’t tonight.”
