SB Nation’s Steelers community, Behind The Steel Curtain, has some reaction to the trade that sent Santonio Holmes to the Jets.
Steelers Fans Content With Santonio Holmes Trade
Overall, BTSC agrees with the move and the compensation.
Some folks have argued that the Steelers should have gotten more than a fifth round pick for Holmes’ services. Holmes just turned in a career year with over 1,200 yards receiving and is just a couple of years removed from a Super Bowl MVP.
However, BTSC points to recent trades in determining this was about right. Randy Moss was traded for a fourth round pick and Anquan Boldin was traded for a mid-round pick as well.
So if you’re the Steelers, you’re giving up perhaps 12 solid games for Holmes by trading him. If you think it’s absurd to not just wait a year and let him leave in free agency for a higher compensatory pick, I’d say again that it’s foolish to question the Rooney’s determination on this one. The men know how to assess risk and clearly they thought it was dangerous to keep Holmes around the squad next year if they had no intentions of re-upping him for the long term.
