It was hardly surprising news, but it still had to be officially announced: Santonio Holmes, the newest Jets wide receiver, has been suspended for the first four games of the 2010 season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, the NFL announced on Monday.
Santonio Holmes Officially Suspended For First Four Games Of 2010 Season
As is custom, Holmes will be allowed to participate in training camp and play in the preseason games before serving his punishment. Again though, this was a decision that everyone expected, including the Jets.
“We understood that was part of it, but we just felt like even with that, it was worth it,” general manager Mike Tannenbaum said. “Obviously, a guy with his production and at 26 years old, he would not have been available if these indiscretions didn’t happen, and obviously the suspension. But, with that said, we just felt like the risk and the price was reasonable for us.”
If Holmes were to violate the league’s policy again, he would the be suspended for the entire season.
