Brian Roberts, who is suffering from a strained abdominal muscle that forced him to sit out the Orioles games on Saturday and Sunday, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday, retroactive to April 10.
Brian Roberts Placed On 15-Day DL
Roberts injured himself Friday against the Blue Jays, sliding into second base on a steal in the first inning. He also missed a majority of spring training with a herniated disk in his back.
In four game with Baltimore this season, Roberts is hitting .143 (2-for-14) with a double.
The Orioles will fill his roster spot by calling up Justin Turner from Norfolk (AAA). Turner appeared in 12 games in 2009 with Baltimore, and went 11-for-32 in 16 spring training games this season.
For a team that is off to a very slow start in the tough A.L. East -- the Orioles are just 1-5, and have managed to plate only 19 runs -- losing Roberts for any extended period of time is going to hurt. The second baseman has appeared in at least 143 games in five of the past six seasons and has turned in an OPS+ of 111 or better in four of the past five years.
