Memphis’ Elliot Williams Signs With Agent, Declares For NBA Draft

Memphis sophomore guard Elliot Williams will sign with an agent and declare for the NBA Draft, precluding any possibility of him returning to school, according to Jeff Goodman of Fox Sports.

The move is hardly a surprise given Williams’ mother’s failing health, as well as the fact that Williams figures to be a late first-round pick, meaning he should get a guaranteed contract (second-round contracts are usually not guaranteed). Williams began his college career at Duke, but transferred after his freshman season to be closer to his mother, who is undergoing treatment for cancer. The NCAA granted him a hardship waiver that allowed him to play immediately and skip the usual sitting out period for transfers.

The 6’4”, 180-pound Williams has drawn comparisons to Mavs guard Jason Terry given his scoring ability as a combo guard. While ESPN’s Chad Ford only ranks him 39th, Draft Express has him firmly in the first-round as the 25th-best prospect, which is likely about where he can expect to go on draft night. While Williams’ quick first-step and top-end athleticism allow him to get to the basket with ease, his inability to drive or finish with his right hand (he’s a southpaw), and his inconsistent shooting stroke drop his stock.

Williams averaged 17.9 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game for the Tigers this past season.
