Brandon Roy To Have Knee Surgery, Will Miss Opening Round

As Portland prepares for their opening round series against the Phoenix Suns, which is set to tip Sunday night, they were dealt a bit of sobering news Thursday night: Brandon Roy, who suffered a slight meniscus tear, will undergo knee surgery on Friday. He will miss the whole first round, according to the team’s official release:

“This was not an easy decision to make,” said Roy. “But, if I’m going to be out there, I want to be contributing. If we’re fortunate enough to advance in the playoffs, having the surgery now gives me the best opportunity to help our team.”
Dr. Don Roberts will perform the knee arthroscopy on Friday morning at Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver, WA. A timetable for Roy’s return will be set following surgery, but he’ll be sidelined for at least the first round series vs. the Phoenix Suns.

While Roy remains optimistic that he’d be able to play were the Blazers to advance past the Suns, it seems unlikely. The typical recovery for this kind of surgery is 4-6 weeks, and according to Yahoo!‘s Adrian Wojnarowski, a source says, “‘There’s no way’ [Roy would] return this season, even if Blazers advance.”

It’s going to take a lot of work to convince someone to root for the unlucky/snakebiten/cursed Blazers in the playoffs.

For all things Blazers, be sure to visit Blazersedge.
