Strikeforce: Nashville Results - Jake Shields Shocks Dan Henderson; Wild Brawl Breaks Out After Fight Ends
In the first round Henderson was able to land a big right hand that stiffened Shields and appeared to knock him out. Henderson followed him to the ground and landed a lot of punches but Shields was able to survive until the round ended. It appeared clear from the first round that Shields would not be able to get the fight to the ground, nor would he be able to deal with the thunderous right hand of Dan Henderson.
But after the one minute rest period everything changed. Shields was able to get Henderson to the ground at which point he easily passed Henderson’s guard and was able to achieve mount. From there Shields landed many, many punches and dominated the entire round. Rounds 3, 4, and 5 all saw Shields able to get the fight to the ground and achieve mount with relative ease. While it never appeared that Jake was that close to ending the fight, he made a clear statement that despite it being clear that Henderson was brought in to beat him, he was dominating the fight.
In the end the judges scored the fight 49-46, 49-45, 48-45 all for Jake Shields. With the win Shields retains his Strikeforce middleweight championship.
However, in the wake of the fight there was some disturbing action. As Shields was giving his post-fight interview, Jason “Mayhem” Miller came into the cage and asked when he would get a rematch. At this point Miller was jumped by members of Jake Shields’ camp including Nick & Nate Diaz and Gilbert Melendez. This all took place on a show that ran over its allotted time and was running into the time when people would be tuning in to watch their local news. It’s not a positive step for MMA to have a wild brawl seen in the cage on a major network.
SB Nation will have more information as developments come out on both the scheduled fights and the wild brawl.
