So Much For Fox Sports’ Idea Of An Online Postrace Show

After an avalanche of complaints about its Phoenix postrace coverage (or lack thereof), Fox Sports decided to make a fan-friendly move: Air extra interviews and analysis following the race at FoxSports.com to ensure major storylines would get covered if the network ran over its broadcast window.

↵Unfortunately, due to NASCAR’s short-sighted online deal with Turner Sports, that won’t happen.

↵

A decade ago, NASCAR sold its online soul to Turner (NASCAR.com), and the move is still making an impact.

↵

NASCAR.com has exclusive online rights to video, meaning no other site can produce video clips from the track.

↵Turner quickly stepped in and overruled Fox’s idea of an extended postrace show, as Dustin Long reports.

↵It’s unfortunate for the sport. The more sites that are able to use video, the better for NASCAR’s exposure.

↵Take SB Nation, for example: Most of the people who visit this site aren’t race fans. If they had the ability to see video of the cars or drivers or races, they might become more interested. And existing fans might be more engaged.

↵Unfortunately, NASCAR’s contract with Turner means that can’t happen. It’s been that way for a decade, and it’s not changing any time soon.
