Matt Garza Stifles Boston’s Offense, Rays Win Third Straight Over Red Sox
Ben Zobrist added two hits and drove in two runs for the Rays, who have taken the first three games in the set and aim for the sweep on Monday in the annual Patriots' Day contest.
Matt Garza (3-0) limited Boston's bats to four hits over eight scoreless innings, fanning five and walking two.
Dustin Pedroia's ninth-inning sacrifice fly provided the sole run for the Red Sox, who have lost four in a row and five of six. Jon Lester (0-2) suffered the loss after yielding seven hits and seven runs over six full frames.
Pena's mammoth two-run shot to dead center in the second got the Rays on the board, and Tampa tacked on two more in the third when Zobrist brought in a pair with a single up the middle.
Garza, meanwhile, only allowed one walk through the first 4 2/3 innings. Adrian Beltre put an end to any thought of extending the no-hit bid with a line-drive off the Green Monster but was thrown out at second to end the frame.
Pena walked to start the Tampa sixth and Upton made it a 6-0 game when he followed with a long blast to center. Willy Aybar hit a ground-rule double, then Dioner Navarro reached on Lester's bad throw to first, and Gabe Kapler drove in another run on a grounder to short.
The Sox got their only run of the game in their final turn at the plate against Michael Ekstrom. Mike Cameron hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a groundout, then scored when Pedroia lifted a fly to right. Victor Martinez grounded out to end the contest.
