In Progress: Without Garnett, Celtics Battling Heat In Game 2
Glen Davis, who was filling in for a suspended Kevin Garnett, donated 23 points and eight rebounds for the Celtics, who won 85-76 in Game 1 on Saturday. In the latter stages of that contest, Garnett threw an elbow at Miami's Quentin Richardson, resulting in a one-game suspension for the star forward.
Kendrick Perkins finished with 13 points and nine rebounds. Paul Pierce also chipped in 13 points for Boston, which shot 48 percent from the field.
Dwyane Wade ended with 29 points and five assists for the Heat, who got 13 points and seven boards from Michael Beasley. Mario Chalmers tallied 10 points off the bench for Miami, which shot just 38.2 percent from the floor and was limited to just 10 points in the second quarter.
Game 3 of this best-of-seven series is set for Friday in Miami.
The Celtics jumped out to a 19-10 lead on a Davis layup with 3:45 remaining in the first quarter. Chalmers and Richardson responded for the Heat with back- to-back three-pointers to cut the gap to three, 19-16.
Boston held a 23-18 margin moments later, but Miami bridged the first and second periods with an 11-2 run to go in front. Jermaine O’Neal’s slam made it 29-25 less than two minutes into the second.
But the Heat went over eight minutes without a point in the second, allowing the Celtics to go on a 21-0 burst. Allen and Davis tallied eight and six points, respectively, during the stretch, which Davis capped with a pair of free throws to make it 46-29 with 2 1/2 minutes to go until half.
Beasley’s jumper stopped the bleeding with 2:07 left, but Boston held a 49-33 lead at the break.
Ahead 51-37 early in the third, Boston ripped off 18 straight points to put the game away. Allen made a trio of three-pointers during the surge, including a trey to make it 69-37 with over 5 1/2 minutes left. The score was 85-59 heading to the fourth.
