An interesting lightweight battle in the form of Takanori Gomi vs. Joe Stevenson has been agreed upon to take place at UFC on Versus 2. The card is set to go down on August 1 from EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.
MMAmania.com recently confirmed the match up with a source close to the situation.
Both fighters are coming off unimpressive showings resulting in defeat. Gomi’s much-celebrated debut with the UFC at UFC Fight Night 21: “Florian vs. Gomi” left a lot to be desired as the former Pride FC champion was thoroughly outworked and outskilled before succumbing to a rear-naked choke in the third round.
Takanori Gomi v. Joe Stevenson Fight Planned For UFC on Versus 2
Gomi got picked apart by Kenny Florian for the entire bout. Florian was able to land seemingly at will and the choke was a merciful end to the bout. Stevenson got eaten alive on the ground by George Sotiropoulos in his last bout.
Both men have solid boxing skills but Gomi has more power and technique. Still, his reflexes looked slow against Florian which make it interesting to see if Stevenson can just “out quick” him. In addition Stevenson may be able to win the fight by going back to his old tricks of just straight up wrestling.
