The rivalry between Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson heated up at Talladega on Sunday after a slowing Johnson forced Gordon to the bottom of the track just before Gordon was caught in a wreck.
Jeff Gordon ‘Pissed’ At Teammate Jimmie Johnson After Talladega Incident
Gordon was angry that Johnson slowed him down, and had harsher words than just saying he was “disappointed” in his teammate, as both drivers said about the other at Texas.
“I was coming 10 mph faster than anybody, and the 48 is testing my patience, I can tell you that,” he said. “It takes a lot to make me mad, and I am pissed right now.”
Just prior to the crash, Gordon had a boost of momentum and was flying up toward the front. But Johnson, he said, “decided to change three lanes and keep me from going by him.”
“That’s just not cool when you’ve got cars going that much faster than you,” he said.
Gordon suggested that Johnson should have recognized Gordon was going much faster than him and added, “I don’t know what it is with me and him right now, but whatever.”
And Gordon made it sound as if he wouldn’t put up with much more from Johnson.
“He’s been testing my patience,” Gordon said, “and it’s about reached its boiling point.”
Johnson did not address the Gordon incident after getting caught in a wreck on the second green-white-checkered attempt but said, “I’ve been fortunate to miss a lot of (the wrecks). I just hope to miss (the wrecks in) the fall when the points are really on the line.”
Said Johnson/Gordon teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr: “They get along fine. Both of ’em want to be champions. You can’t fault em for both being so damn good they run into each other. They’re battling for the same spot all the time.
“Everybody butts heads once in awhile, but they laugh and joke about it during the week amongst themselves, cause it ain’t no big damn deal. ”
