David Price Hurls Complete-Game Shutout; Rays Beat Jays 6-0
St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - David Price threw the first shutout of his career to help the Tampa Bay Rays to a 6-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays in the rubber match of a three-game series.
Price (3-1) gave up just four hits and one walk with nine strikeouts for the Rays, who have won four of five. Jason Bartlett and John Jaso each drove in a pair of runs in the win.
Brandon Morrow (1-2) was charged with two runs on three hits with six walks and eight strikeouts over six frames to take the loss for Toronto, which has dropped three of four. Alex Gonzalez and John McDonald each hit a double in the loss.
Toronto had men on first and second with one out in the third, but Price struck out Aaron Hill and Adam Lind to close the inning.
Morrow struggled with his control early and walked five batters through the first four innings, but he was helped by Jose Molina as the catcher threw out a baserunner in each of the first four innings, including Carl Crawford twice.
In the fifth, though, the Rays moved in front. Carlos Pena worked a walk to leadoff the inning and B.J. Upton's bloop double to right, the first hit of the game for the Rays, put runners on second and third. Jaso followed with a single to right for a 2-0 lead.
Price, meanwhile, was cruising through the start as the two strikeouts in the third began a string of 12 consecutive batters retired before Jose Bautista hit a one-out single in the seventh.
Molina led off the eighth with a single, but John McDonald grounded into a double play and Mike McCoy popped out to end the inning.
Tampa sealed the win in the bottom of the eighth with a four-run frame. With Jason Frasor on the mound and two on, Evan Longoria punched a single to center to score Crawford. Pena then brought home a run with a double and a two-run double from Bartlett made it a 6-0 game.
The Rays are 27-12 versus Toronto dating back to the beginning of the 2008 season...Morrow is 0-1 in six games (two starts) against the Rays...Price is now 3-0 in four starts against Toronto...Tampa hosts Oakland for a two-game set starting on Tuesday...It was also Price’s first complete game of his career...Toronto hosts Boston for three games starting on Monday.
