Checking in on spring football with SBN’s PAC-10 blogs:
Hot Non-Binding PACtion: Spring Games On The West Coast
• Washington State. For CougCenter, Saturday’s action was all about the big-play defense, to the chagrin of the receiving corps:
On the final play of the Spring game, Jeffrey Solomon took a bubble screen, turned up field, and was met by two defensive backs, losing the ball in the process. One play couldn’t more perfectly sum up the scrimmage as a whole. This has to bode well for a team that went 1-11 last year, surrendered at least 27 points a game, and has to open the 2010 season against Oklahoma State, right? (Right?)
• UCLA. The Bruins have their spring game at night, which is fancy, and at the Rose Bowl, which is also fancy and quite nice in the non-summer months. Bruins Nation liked what they saw out of the defense and special teams:
I think this defense will be better than anticipated even with all the guys we lost. Datone was all over the field and I expect an All Pac 10 type of performance from him this fall. The team speed on defense is noticeable and although I still have concerns about our DT’s, I don’t think it’s a dire situation. And as for UCLA’s offense: “She may not be pretty, but she’s ours.“ At this point, they ought to just be proud they haven’t outright killed a quarterback so far this season.
