Creighton’s Hire Creates Another Father-Son Duo in College Hoops

Back on college hoops signing day there was a lot of talk about sons staying at home to help fathers in two prominent cases of top 100 players. The news we talked about yesterday -- Creighton’s quick move to hire Greg McDermott from Iowa State -- has created another father-son combo in college hoops.↵

↵Greg's son, Doug, is rated as a three-star recruit according to Rivals. Previously, with dad toiling away in the Big 12, Doug had intended to attend Northern Iowa. Now, if all the paper work passes, UNI not only loses a big recruit, but it does so knowing that he'll land in the same conference with a rival at Creighton. More from the Des Moines Register:↵

↵↵⇥“That, probably more than anything, is what tipped the scales for me to go ahead and commit to Creighton,” McDermott said.↵⇥↵⇥Northern Iowa athletic director Troy Dannen said he hasn’t received an official waiver request on Doug McDermott’s behalf, which would release him from his letter of intent, and he hasn’t talked to Panther coach Ben Jacobson yet.↵⇥

↵⇥↵⇥“Right now there are a lot of assumptions,” Dannen said. “Probably appropriate assumptions. But until the waiver comes I would not want to comment.”↵⇥

↵↵For what it’s worth, Northern Iowa has zero motivation, other than just pure human decency, when it comes to releasing Doug from his commitment. I’d liken it to what the Utah Jazz did with Derek Fisher a few years back to accommodate the point guard’s needs for his daughter’s health care. It was the right thing to do, even if it came back to bite them when Fisher went to play with someone they’d face frequently. As unpleasant as it is for UNI, it’s probably the right thing to do.
