Rivalry-specific trophies are most often associated with the trappings of college football, where for some programs it’s just as, or perhaps, even more important to defeat your arch nemesis than it is to get to a bowl game or have a winning record. While you can find dozens of examples in college football, it’s a bit of a rarity in baseball at any level.

Cubs and White Sox Rivalry Now Has a Trophy

↵↵The Cubs and the White Sox are set to ↵introduce the phenomenon to the diamond, as starting this year the two teams will vie for the Crosstown Cup, which is to be awarded to the team that has the most wins after their six scheduled games. Because it is possible for the teams to be tied with three wins apiece after the two three-game series, in that event the trophy will be awarded to the team that wins the final game. Probably not the best of circumstances, but that’s what they decided, unless in future years Major League Baseball wants to grant the rivalry a seventh regular season game.↵

↵In other Chicago baseball rivalry rumblings, noted White Sox fan/President Barack Obama snuck in a jab against the Cubbies yesterday while welcoming the Yankees to the White House to recognize their World Series title from last year.↵
↵↵⇥The Yankees hadn’t been to the White House for such a ceremony in nine years, and the president said that “must have felt like an eternity for Yankees fans. I think other teams would be just fine with a spell like that.” ↵⇥He then paused mischievously and added: “The Cubs, for example.”↵↵↵That might not leave him in good standing with the society of Cubs fans who inducted him against his will.↵
