Robbie Lawler will face Renato “Babalu” Sobral in a 195-pound catch-weight bout at Strikeforce’s June 16 event at the Nokia Theatre on Los Angeles, Sherdog.com has learned.
”[Jason “Mayhem”] Miller isn’t fighting because we believe, in speaking with the Tennessee Athletic Commission, that he will put under some type of suspension,” Coker told Sherdog.com on Thursday. “After reviewing the tape (of the April 17 incident), we felt that Miller shouldn’t headline our next event. We will honor the Tennessee commission’s decision when it’s announced.”
Robbie Lawler And Renato “Babalu” Sobral To Meet In Strikeforce Catchweigh Bout
There’s a lot to sift through in a few short paragraphs. Obviously the biggest thing here is the fight. For a roster light on highly regarded fighters it’s weird to see a division like light heavyweight, which is light on challengers, have one of it’s better fighters in Babalu put against a very good middleweight. Lawler hits very hard and has been improving his defensive wrestling over the past few years, it’ll be interesting to see how he deals with the size of the bigger Sobral.
But almost as interesting as the fight announcement is the fact that Coker continues to seem like the way he is going to play the “brawl” story is to fault Jason “Mayhem” Miller. Strikeforce controls who goes in and out of a cage during an event, for them to blame Miller for entering the cage during the interviews is garbage. For them to seemingly dismiss team Cesar Gracie for starting the actual brawl and gang stomping Miller is even more disgusting. For a guy whose entire promotion was based on doing things the right way this is a really disappointing thing to see happening.
