Midfielder Lori Lindsey was surprisingly available when Women’s Professional Soccer teams announced who they were making available for the offseason’s expansion draft, but a strong winter with the U.S. Women’s National Team and a great start to her Philadelphia Independence career has left last season with the Washington Freedom behind.
Lori Lindsey Wins Women’s Professional Soccer Player of the Month
Today, Lindsey’s new start got a boost when she was named WPS Player of the Month for April, beating out Saint Louis Athletica goalkeeper Hope Solo, Boston Breakers midfielder Kelly Smith and former Freedom teammate Abby Wambach.
Lindsey, the second pick in the 2009 Expansion Draft, recorded a WPS record three assists on Sunday against Washington, leading the Independence to their first win, capping an inaugural month that saw Paul Riley’s men undefeated (1-2-0) in three matches. Their five points are one behind league leading FC Gold Pride and Sky Blue FC.
This weekend, Philadelphia has a chance to jump into first place, hosting the winless (fellow expansion team) Atlanta Beat, who will be without number one draft pick Tobin Heath, out with a sprained ankle. Meanwhile, Gold Pride and Sky Blue meet in New Jersey, a rematch of Gold Pride’s win two weeks ago in the Bay Area.
