Agent: McNabb Is ‘Optimistic’ Contract Extension Will Come

Fletcher Smith, agent for Donovan McNabb, spoke with the Washington Post regarding the next move for his client.

According to Smith, the next step in the process is securing a contract extension.

I don’t know if it will happen, but I would say I’m hopeful or optimistic that a deal will get done. Usually when you have a trade of this magnitude, teams want to get an extension done because of the commitment they’ve made to acquire the player. The trade was just consummated, and my first goal was to make sure the trade happened, so that’s where my focus has been. Donovan’s desire was to play for the Washington Redskins, that’s happened, and he’s very happy it happened. The next step would be to see about that [a contract extension], so we’ll see.

McNabb has just one year remaining on his contract so an extension is a necessity at this point.

McNabb is coming off of a high salary and the Redskins gave up important draft picks to secure him to it would appear McNabb has the leverage here. Last year, the Eagles gave him what a lot of folks have called a “financial apology” for benching him in a week 12 loss. They didn’t add any new money to his contract but guaranteed more of it.

Keep up with the McNabb trade over at Hogs Haven.
