The Kings and the Ducks are natural rivals because of their close proximity and when the Southern California foes play the games do have an extra edge to them.
Kings-Ducks Rivalry Lacking Playoff Experience
↵But the intensity of the rivalry will never approach the heights of, say, the Oilers-Flames or Flyers-Rangers, until Los Angeles and Anaheim meet in the playoffs.
↵Hockey fans in Southern California will have to wait another year for that to occur. While the Kings are in the playoffs for the first time since 2002, the Ducks were eliminated from post-season contention Tuesday night.
↵The fact that the Kings and Ducks have never made the playoffs in the same year since Anaheim joined the NHL in 1993 would seem a strange oddity except when you remember the teams don’t have long traditions of success. The Kings were relevant during the Gretzky Years but have been to the Stanley Cup Finals only once.
↵The Ducks did win the cup in 2006-07 but they started out as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Enough said.
