The Fred Hill-Rutgers Situation is a lot like the Mike Leach-Texas Tech Situation. A volatile coach seemingly goes one step too far and the school attempts to use the opportunity to fire the coach with cause and get out of paying him large sums of money. The big difference? Mike Leach is a really good coach with proven results. Fred Hill hasn’t proven anything in his four seasons with the Scarlet Knights and his results have only proven his naysayers right.
Sources: Rutgers Will Fire Fred Hill On Thursday
On the heels of a profanity-filled incident between him and a Pittsburgh baseball coach (which raises so many questions) and news that his star player, Mike Rosario, may be transferring, Rutgers will move to fire Hill on Thursday according to FoxSports' Jeff Goodman.
According to sources, the school is expected to make an announcement to sever ties with Hill on Thursday.
The school has been looking into trying to fire Hill with cause, which would allow them to avoid paying a $1.8 million buyout.
The writing has been on the wall for a long time with Hill. Fans soured on him seasons ago. His own players turned on him. And the school almost fired him last month. In not moving quick enough, the Knights look foolish with this added round of embarrassment.
What has become clear as day is that Rutgers erred in not pushing Hill out the door last month, when it could have been attributed to his overwhelmingly poor performance. Iowa canned their coach after three similarly miserable years. While that would have elicited a fierce reaction from the local media in light of the budget woes, the response would have been positively muted compared to this catastrophe. All the drama could have been swept under the rug.
