Here’s a ready-made Movie Of The Week for your Tuesday doldrums: The High School Basketballer Who Wasn’t.
Texas High School Basketball Star Confesses Identity Fraud
↵For two weeks, Guerdwich Montimere told everyone at Permian High in Odessa, Texas, that the rumors and allegations were false - that he really was 16-year-old sophomore basketball star and Haitian orphan Jerry Joseph.
Tuesday afternoon, with the authorities closing in, he finally admitted the truth - that he is, in fact, Montimere. That he is, in fact, 22 years old and a 2007 graduate of Dillard High in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.↵The story has been gaining speed for several days now, and it’s got no shortage of oddities apart from the main attraction. My favorite, from last week:
↵[Immigration & Customs Enforcement] spokeswoman Leticia Zamarripa told the USA Today that officials from her agency have determined through fingerprints that Joseph is not Montimere. He is, however, in the country illegally. An immigration hearing is pending.
↵OK, so the fingerprinting snafu is clearly a smokescreen to cover the next twist, which is that Montimere IS Leticia Zamarripa, right? And then she’s going to rip off a rubber mask at a press conference to reveal Tom Cruise underneath? You all see where this is going.
