Stoke City goalkeeper Thomas Sørensen dislocated his elbow two weeks ago in the Potters’ loss at Chelsea, but on Monday he was named by Morten Olsen to Denmark’s 30-man provisional squad for this summer’s World Cup.
Denmark Names Injured Sorensen To Provisional Squad
When the injury occurred on April 25, it was originally feared Sørensen would miss the World Cup, having to be carted from the pitch at Stamford Bridge while being administered oxygen. When his elbow was reset at a local hospital it was determined the Dane would not need surgery and the World Cup was still a possibility. Now, only a setback will keep Sørensen from being available for Denmark on June 13.
Along with his first choice Sørensen, Olsen has named goalkeepers Jesper Christiansen, Kim Christensen and Stephan Anderson to his provisional squad, from which the final, 23-man World Cup team will be chosen before June 1.
In defense, Daniel Agger and Per Kroldrup are the most recognizable names of a group that includes Lars Jacobsen, Patrick Mtiliga, Simon Busk, Simon Kjaer and William Kvist Jorgensen.
A talented midfield includes Juventus’s Christan Poulsen, Werder Bremen’s Daniel Jensen, Thomas Kahlenberg of Wolfsburg and veteran Ajax attacker Dennis Rommedhal. That quartet is buttressed by Christian Eriksen, Jakob Poulsen, Michael Silberbauer, Mikkel Beckmann, Thomas Enevoldsen, Jesper Gronkjaer, Martin Jorgensen and Michael Krohn-Dehli.
A thin striker corps is headed by Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner but also features Jon Dahl Tomasson and Soren Larsen.
Those 26 players will be called-up for Denmark’s May 27 friendly with Senegal, while Andres Moller Christensen, Leon Jessen, Mikkel Thygesen and Morten Rasmussen round out Olsen’s 30, waiting on standby.
