Eric Byrnes is getting paid $11 million to go 2-for-3 with two home runs in a men’s softball league in which his team is named after a bar. There is even video evidence of Byrnes’ “historic” first hit:

↵If I was playing against Eric Byrnes in this softball league, I’d want to go find Pedro Cerrano or someone to play on my team. How is this fair? It’s like members of a university’s softball team playing on the softball intramural team. Truth be told, I’d probably throw an “accidental” low pitch right at Byrnes’ head to back him off the plate. That’ll show him (and he’d then show me by hitting the next pitch over the fence).
↵And really: was that even an impressive home run? I’m sure Byrnes has done that plenty at the MLB level and most are recorded as F7s. Or off-the-Monster doubles at Fenway Park. Byrnes wasn’t jogging after he hit it because it was a home run -- he was jogging because he’s used to it being an out to end the inning.
↵When the Dutch Goose softball team wins the championship at the end of the season, I hope members of that team feel hollow inside. I hope they hold that trophy, drink a lot of beer and wake up the next morning in their own tears. Because even having one of the worst players in Major League Baseball still guarantees you the best team in any softball league in America.
