The Staal family is obviously a hockey force, with three brothers in the NHL and a fourth ready to make noise in the professional ranks. That fourth brother, Jared Staal, who recently concluded his junior career with Sudbury of the OHL, has had his NHL rights traded from the Phoenix Coyotes to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Stocking Up On Staal’s: Carolina Trades Draft Pick For Eric’s Brother Jared
Phoenix receives a fifth round pick in exchange for Staal, who joins his oldest brother Eric in Carolina, where the elder Staal is captain of the Hurricanes.
Jared, 19, was drafted 49th overall by the Coyotes in 2008. He’s played a handful of AHL games, including five with San Antonio this past season. It’s likely that Jared will be in the AHL once again come next season, but it appears as though it’ll be with the Charlotte Checkers, the AHL affiliate of the Hurricanes.
Carolina must re-sign him to an entry-level contract by the end of the month or Jared will re-enter the NHL Draft, where he’ll be available to any of the league’s 30 teams.
