You remember the 2004 Boston Red Sox, don’t you?
Flyers Can Become Fourth Major Pro Team To Win After 0-3 Hole
They were the last major professional sports team to return from an 0-3 series hole to win a Game 7 and a series. That team of destiny knocked off the rival New York Yankees in that fashion, of course, eventually riding the momentum to a World Series sweep.
But before the Sox made history six years ago, the feat hadn’t been pulled off in 29 years, when the 1975 New York Islanders came back from 0-3 down against the Pittsburgh Penguins to win Game 7. In the next round, they almost did it again. Down 0-3 to the Philadelphia Flyers, the Islanders stormed back from down 0-3 for the second straight series to force a seventh game, but the Flyers won on their way to a second consecutive Stanley Cup.
Before that? The 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs came back to win the Stanley Cup after the Detroit Red Wings blew a 3-0 lead. And that’s it. Three teams in major professional sports have ever done what the 2010 Flyers will try to do tonight. It’s happened twice in hockey, once in baseball and never in basketball.
If the Flyers can pull out a win, it will be a truly amazing accomplishment.
