According to Harry Harris at ESPN Soccernet, sources within the FA feel Lord Sebastien Coe is the only person who can save England’s World Cup bid.
Lord Coe Reportedly A Contender To Replace Triesman
Triesman’s embarrassing departure, which follows allegations that he claimed Spain were trying to bribe World Cup referees, is already being seen as a potentially mortal blow to England’s hopes of winning the right to host the 2018 tournament.
A new chairman for the bid team must now be found and Coe is being viewed as a leading contender, thanks in no small part to his extensive experience in sports administration.
A two-time gold medal-winner runner, Coe has served as a Conservative Party member of Parliament who, stepping into the chairmanship of London’s bid to get the 2012 Summer Olympics, is seen as crucial to the nation’s landing the next summer games.
Coe is already a member of the World Cup bid committee and has previously held positions within FIFA, being named to the organization’s ethics commission in 2006 – a position from which he stepped down to join England’s quest to land the 2018 World Cup.
