Da Super Fans Reunion Will Net Minimum Four Super Bowls

There’s no comedy sketch about sports or sports fandom more widely recognized than Bill Swerski’s Superfans segment on

Saturday Night Live

. Many favorite recurring characters on SNL find their way into movie projects (MacGruber being the latest in a long line) and indeed that was the case for Da Superfans.

↵↵In 1995, Bob Odenkirk (once a co-host on HBO’s Mr. Show and currently playing skeezy lawyer Saul Goodman on AMC’s Breaking Bad) and Robert Smigel (one of the original Superfans and voice of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog) developed a screenplay about the characters for Paramount that purportedly satirized money’s ever-present influence on professional sports. A logical choice for the plot, given the blue-collar everyman nature of the characters. For whatever reason, the studio never saw fit to send the idea into production.↵

↵↵⇥“It’s an expansion of the world of the Super Fans,” Smigel said in an interview Tuesday. “We get to meet their families, their kids, their wives, go to church with them.”↵⇥↵⇥Da plot? Da Bears are being sold, and beloved Soldier Field is being converted into luxury boxes for the rich.↵⇥

↵↵↵Audiences will most likely never see “Da Bears Movie Dat Wasn’t” on the big screen, but a few lucky people will be able to watch the screenplay get a live reading, as George Wendt, Joe Mantegna, Robert Smigel and Bob Odenkirk will get together for a one-night only performance on June 19 at Chicago’s Park West. And if the absence of Mike Myers and Chris Farley from the event puts a damper on it, that will be more than offset by the news that Mike Ditka is going to be involved. Which means Hollywood will be forced to cease production of all future cinematic endeavors for fear of failing to match the acting prowess of Ditka. In fact, the sole reason Da Superfan movie was never made is because there is not a movie projector in existence that can withstand the challenge of having to broadcast the image of Ditka onto the silver screen.↵
