There was drama in Atlanta today. Drama and excitement. And yet Jason Heyward went 0-5. “Is that even possible?” you ask. It’s possible when Brooks Conrad is involved.

The white-hot Cincinnati Reds took a 9-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth and had to be feeling pretty comfortable until the Braves started chipping away. Four singles, a walk, and an error later, the score was 9-6 and Heyward came up with the bases loaded.
That’s not when the drama happened, though. The drama happened next, after Heyward struck out.
Up came 30 year old pinch-hitter Brooks Conrad, he of the .200 lifetime average and the four lifetime home runs. Conrad’s been a AAA ballplayer for a while, but today he got his shot at playing hero and, after a lengthy at bat, took Francisco Cordero deep to left-center. Laynce Nix went up to attempt a catch at the wall, but the ball bounced off his glove and over the fence for a one-out, walk-off grand slam.
The best part? Conrad thought Nix made the catch and had to turn around to jog around the bases.
This marks just the 24th time in Major League history that a three-run deficit has been erased by a walk-off grand slam. And I’m guessing most of those didn’t cap off a seven-run rally. The Reds have staged a miraculous climb all the way up to first place, but this was the kind of game that can make you forget about all the good you’ve ever done.
Congratulations to Brooks Conrad on becoming someone somebody might someday recognize.
