John Maine threw five pitches in his Thursday start. The fastest of them came in at 85.1mph. Maine normally sits in the high-80s and low-90s, so this was cause for concern, and Jerry Manuel immediately came out and called to the bullpen. Maine was none too pleased with the decision, insisting that he felt fine, but he came out anyway, and an examination of his shoulder revealed weakness that will send Maine to the sidelines:
Shoulder Weakness Sends John Maine To The DL
NEW YORK -- After a brief and messy exchange of words, the Mets placed starting pitcher John Maine on the 15-day disabled list on Friday with what the club termed "right shoulder weakness."
Maine and Manuel went on to have a heated discussion in the dugout before parting, and after the game, Maine said - among other things:
"Cut me some slack."
"I didn't get asked a chance [to stay in] and that's what I'm most upset about."
"There's no f*****' reason I should be seeing a doctor tomorrow."
Pitching coach Dan Warthen came back with:
“John is a habitual liar when it comes to his health.”
It's a messy situation, and given that Jon Niese just went on the DL, the Mets didn't want to lose another starter. Still, one needs to be worried when they see a guy come out throwing 5mph slower than usual, so it's important that Maine get better before he makes things worse.
Elmer Dessens has been called up from AAA to take Maine's roster spot for the time being. Through nine starts, Maine threw 39.2 innings, striking out 39 but allowing 29 runs.
