Cardinals pitcher Brad Penny hit a grand slam to help his own cause on Friday, but later was pulled from the game because of a strained right side.

Penny hit the grand slam in the third inning off Angels' pitcher Joel Piniero. Penny allowed five hits, four runs, no walks and struck out one in his three innings of work before leaving the game.
On the season, Penny is 3-4 with a 3.23 ERA.
