The above is a list of the slowest home run trots of the season to date. And on the Alex Gonzalez trot, Gonzalez took extra long because he forgot to touch first base and had to go back.

The reason I bring this up now is because, Monday night, David Ortiz became the first player all year to take more than 30 seconds to round the bases. He’d come within a second on a few occasions before, but he finally went over the top on Monday and took his sweet ass time. Although, who can blame him? It was a dramatic, earth-shattering blast that flew 361 feet and put the Red Sox on top of the Rays 1-0 in the second inning.

In Ortiz’s defense, it was a ball down the line that could’ve gone foul, but that’s still a ball you’d like to see a guy run out. Instead, when the camera cut back to Ortiz after showing the ball land in the seats, he’d only gotten halfway to first base. And he didn’t exactly speed things up the rest of the way.

It’s one thing to admire a home run, but it’s quite another to take several seconds longer to run it out than everybody else. Ortiz has yet to be hit by a pitch on the season, but given these numbers, I’d say it’s only a matter of time before a pitcher lets a ball get away.
