Georges St. Pierre And Freddie Roach Team Up For Next Title Fight

Dave Doyle has a excellent piece worth checking out with more on GSP

Georges St. Pierre kicked off a week long stint yesterday training at Freddie Roach's renowned Wild Card gym in Hollywood. The UFC's top dog at 170 is getting set to coach the next season of "The Ultimate Fighter," but for now St. Pierre is nearly 3,000 miles from his home in Montreal to refocus and improve.

"It is time to focus on my boxing," St. Pierre said. "When I get to the other side of my career I don't want to be one of those fighters who have been hit too many times, so they keep getting knocked out. If you have the opportunity to work with someone like Freddy, you take advantage."

Roach is admittedly still getting used to the subtle differences between the two sports, but all signs seem to indicate the pair is off to a fast start.

“It’s a challenge for me as much as it is for him,” Roach said. “The footwork and the stances are different than what I’m used to working with. I’ve never looked at MMA the way some [in boxing] have. A fighter is a fighter and a good one is going to pick up knowledge from wherever they can and apply it as they can.”

Roach is just the latest master to lend a hand in GSP’s mixture of training. Although primarily working out of the Tri-Star gym in Montreal, St. Pierre has always embraced the chance to travel the MMA landscape to learn from the best.

“This is my attitude when I go to the gym: Did I leave the gym that day a better fighter than I did when I came in? I’ve only been here a few days with Freddie and each time I left feeling like I was better.”

From New York with Renzo Gracie to Albuqueque’s Greg Jackson camp, this latest move out west isnt likely to be his last.
