Led by Robin van Persie's double, Netherlands bested Mexico, 2-1, in an international friendly Wednesday in rainy Freiburg, Germany, as both sides make final preparations for South Africa.
Mexico Fall To Netherlands In Friendly Behind Van Persie’s Double
Van Persie gave the Oranje an early advantage with his tally in the 17th minute. Rafael Van der Vaart's vision and excellent cross did most of the work for van Persie, who was able to place the ball neatly inside the far post. Just 24 minutes later, van Persie was back on the attack.
This time, it was Ibrahim Afellay providing the assist to the Arsenal striker, who gathered the cross in the box and delivered a sharp volley that found its way past a helpless Ochoa and into the bottom corner of the net.
Mexico mounted a rally in the second half, and managed to get on the board with Javier Hernandez's goal in the 74th minute, but it was too little, too late for El Tri, who were facing a quick turnaround after a 3-1 loss to England on Monday.
For Netherlands, Wednesday’s win, its first match since a win over the U.S. back in March, improved their unbeaten streak to 17 matches.
