Engelaar’s omission was the most notable by Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk, with the PSV Eindhoven central midfielder having played a major role at the 2008 European Championships. Engelaar has since moved back to the Eredivisie from the German Bundesliga and has seen him time in the Oranje’s starting XI taken by Nigel de Jong. Now, Engelaar finds himself out-of-the-team entirely.
