Murder Rocks Virginia Lacrosse Programs

↵↵That’s not a mistake in making that headline plural. In a strange story that’s sure to receive a great deal of attention in the next few hours, days and weeks, George Huguely -- a men’s lacrosse player at Virginia, has been charged with the first degree murder of Yeardley Love -- a women’s lacrosse player at the same school. Details from the Daily Progress:↵

↵↵⇥The victim has been identified as Yeardley Love, 22, a fourth-year student from Cockeysville, Md., according to police.↵⇥↵⇥Officials haven’t determined a cause of death, but Love’s body, which was found at a 14th Street Northwest apartment, showed physical trauma, according to the statement.↵⇥

↵⇥↵⇥Witnesses told police Huguely and Love had been in a relationship, according to authorities.↵⇥

↵↵↵The university has issued a statement about the tragedy. It’s obviously a very sad day for those in the Charlottesville community.↵

↵

↵The strangest bit ancillary of information today comes from an old Washington Post article from April 1, 2006. The topic? The Duke lacrosse investigation and how it was impacting players in the Virginia area. Both Huguely and his father, George Hugely Sr., were quoted in the piece:↵

↵↵⇥“I sympathize for the team,” Huguely said. “They’ve been scrutinized so hard and no one knows what has happened yet. In this country, you’re supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. I think that’s the way it should be.”↵⇥↵⇥[...]↵⇥

↵⇥↵⇥“Regardless of what winds up happening, you have to learn from this experience and take what you can from it,” George Huguely Sr. said. “You always have to remember and can’t let yourself be in a situation where something like this could happen.”↵⇥

↵↵↵While the two events are completely unrelated, you can’t help but do a double take when reading these quotes from four years ago. If there’s any additional info later in the day, we’ll update this post.↵
